Do’s and Don’ts for SEO in 2012 Featured

Let’s first take a look at what appears to be one of the major trends occurring in the algorithms used by the search engines. The heightened commitment toward providing the best user experience possible would logically increase the focus on some aspects of a website while decreasing the weight given to others facets of a site. With that in mind, here are a few do’s and a couple of don’ts for SEO in 2012.

 

Do’s:

* The user experience starts with the relevance and value of the content on any given page. Your SEO efforts should be strongly focused on delivering the highest quality content possible on a consistent basis.

* The search engines’ heightened emphasis on content would seem to indicate that if some is good, then more is better. Increasing your onsite and distributed content will only work, however, as long as quality and value stay at a high level and each piece is unique.

* Open new channels to distribute your content. Develop mini-sites, social media outlets, and blog platforms to grow your sphere of influence.


Don’ts

* Don’t spend a ton of time trying to figure out how to optimize your meta tags and page titles. This isn’t to say that they should be ignored; it just looks like the search engines are focusing more of their attention elsewhere.

* Don’t get tricky. It kind of feels like the search engines took the SEO escapades by JC Penney and Overstock.com earlier in the year personally. If they’re going to go after black hat SEO practices even harder, you don’t want to be at risk when the next hammer comes down.

There you go. Play hard and keep your SEO efforts clean.
